Universal Subtitles problems
Having problems with Universal Subtitles, so in the meantime, I disabled them. More after the jump.
Over half of the videos hosted on pyvideo.org come from blip.tv. We were using urls for the OGV files, but that stopped working with Universal Subtitles about two months ago for unknown reasons. I talked with Craig from Universal Subtitles about it, but he said it wasn't a priority. I haven't been able to find a bug for it, so I don't really know whether they plan on looking into it further or not.
For a while, I wanted to spend some time looking into the problem and find a solution. But I just haven't had time to do that. So, as a horrible stop-gap, I've made some changes to richard that allow you to disable Universal Subtitles site-wide and disabled them for pyvideo.org.
This is a stop-gap solution, though. I want to investigate how Khan Academy (a heavy user of Universal Subtitles) implements Universal Subtitles. Looks like they don't have it kicking in when the page loads, but rather after you select "translated subtitles" from the Options menu. Something like that would allow the videos to play, but would also give us Universal Subtitles functionality. If you're interested in looking into that, it'd be super helpful. Let me know if you're interested in helping.
While investigating, I'll spend some time changing the data so that blip.tv- hosted videos use the blip.tv embed code rather than the OGV file url. That kind of sucks, but it's better than "shutting it off site-wide".
That's where things are with that!
